Hypochlorous Acid; The New Kid On The Block!

THE new product taking the skin care industry by storm is hypochlorous acid. But what is this active ingredient?

Hypochlorous acid  is a weak acid (a chemistry term for acid with a low pH level — think citric acid) with strong antimicrobial properties. It is naturally produced by the human immune system to fight infection. It can also be manufactured commercially by the electrolysis of salt and water, producing a very powerful active ingredient-a biocide with the following properties:

  • Over 100 times more powerful than bleach, yet as gentle as water on the skin
  • Kills 99.99% of bacteria and 99.9% of viruses.
  • Proven to kill coronaviruses.
  • Works in seconds, unlike many other biocides that can take up to 10 minutes to be effective.
  • pH neutral so it is non-sensitising and non-irritating to skin.
  • Anti-inflammatory properties.

Given the antimicrobial (kills bacteria and other germs) and anti-inflammatory (reduces signs of inflammation) properties of hypochlorous acid, and by the fact that it is pH neutral, the use of hypochlorous acid has grown in popularity in the cosmetic/skincare industry. Current application includes its use as an alcohol-free hand sanitizer, and as the “go-to product” for healthy skin. Its use does go beyond the cosmetic industry, with applications also in dentistry and ophthalmology.

Here at eumel, we are delighted to be the first UK company to harness the power of hypochlorous acid for the scalp. Our Eumel Soothing Scalp Spray, with stable hypochlorous acid as the key ingredient, is ideal for hygienic cleansing of the scalp, especially in individuals prone to bacterial imbalance of the scalp. It can also be used as a braid and weave spray, especially when the intervals between hair washing is prolonged. Another application is for cleansing of the scalp after shaving/cutting of hair, and for cleansing of hair cutting instruments, combs and/or bruses.

As hypochlorous acid grows in popularity as a key cosmetic ingredient, we hope that our research team at mia pelle will continue to contribute to the body of research/data in relation to this powerful antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory product.
