Alopecia (hair loss) is a common problem that can affect either men or women, and may even occur in children.
Primary alopecia may be classified as non-scarring or scarring in nature.
In non-scarring alopecia, the hair follicles are still intact, and hence the hair loss is potentially reversible.
In scarring alopecia the hair follicles have been damaged, leaving scars. This type of hair loss is usually irreversible.
It is important to understand that some types of non-scarring alopecia over time can progress to become scarring in nature. An example of this is traction alopecia.
Regardless of the type of alopecia, early diagnosis and management is important.
Join us next week when we continue this blog and explore non-scarring and scarring alopecia in a bit more detail!
